![]() I left on that note, and told him to reach out to me if he and his Dad still want to sell. I told him that several times, to include pointing at what is broken, and what needs to be done. The amp wire was melted through, and the battery terminals were crusty AF, so I cleaned them up a bit and tightened down on them (stripped as all hell) and we jumped it with his other car - it turned over, sputtered, and momentarily fired on starting fluid, but wouldn't "catch." I told the guy that this is something he could reasonably fix. We got one battery installed, with the alternator lead "crushed onto" the positive terminal, and the accessory terminals had the leads for negative, and another positive (for the amp, as well as the headlights and "door pops." The high-intensity after-market headlights were a mess of wires and painter's tape, with the DS door-pop switch disconnected (his Dad had apparently cut a bunch of wires to "clean up the engine bay"), so the battery is required to get the PS door open, because it has no door handles. I agreed to go over and take a look at it with him, bringing my tools and a can of starter fluid. I drove it for a bit, but when I hooked up the second battery it made a blue flash and now it doesn't run." Middle-middle. It's got a 383 stroker, door pops, a tablet for the, and a huge stereo. ![]() He proceeded to admit less-than-great automotive knowledge, but his story went something like this: "My dad bought it from a guy for, and the guy had done a lot of stuff to it. ![]() Full attention, I asked the usual details.does it run (no), what's wrong with it (electrical), how much do you want for it (absurdly low). I was prepared to be offered a new religion, as most people who approach me seem to want to do, but instead he asked if I was interested in his 1979 El Camino. I was in my driveway last month with my '83 ElCo on jacks un-doing 40 years of poor wiring and rust, when a younger guy (early 20's perhaps) approaches me and asks how I'm doing. It didn't run when I bought it, but 1 hour later, it starts right up and roars like a lion. BLUF: I just bought a 1979 El Camino for an absurdly low price. Short of surgery, there is little a person cannot learn to do themselves, and the hard work is, in my opinion, well worth it. Poor wiring frustrates me, but It Is What It Is.įull agreement, doing it for myself feels infinitely better than paying someone to do it. I am, by trade and training, an Electronics Technician, and so wiring doesn't scare me. I am almost done ranting at every wiring faux-pas, and I'm preparing to forgive the PO (spiritually, if not mentally). Lots of threads discuss to-kickdown or not, but I want that passing gear at highway speeds, and it's supposed to be there, so that's a must-have. I got the linkage assembly parts at Advanced, so I'll hook it up proper. Regardless, I'll check the play and maybe throw on some new seals. WRT the leaks, I'm going to jack it up this weekend, get a better look at things and maybe confirm it is, in fact, a TH350. ![]() I was initially concerned about the missing transmission piece - I thought the bell housing was cracked/broke off, but further inspection on the GM TH350 install guide showed very similar pictures, so I believe it is just the dust cover. Nice project you have, enjoy the adventure and rewards of I did it myself.Ĭlick to expand. Thanks for the encouragement. Headlights (along with all your other electrical issues) I suspect you will quickly become a wiring guru quickly, have many options available. Figure out what trans you have and get that squared away right away to avoid trans damage. ( not worth the effort to repair IMHOP)Ĭarb linkage available to get the trans linkage straightened out. Since waking it up and driving it regularly it leaves ONE DROP on the garage floor nightly. Mine sat 15 years and leaked pretty good. On a rare chance it MAY slow down ore even stop leaking after some miles on it after sitting. Rear Crank Seal may also be dripping/ leaking. I'll bet a drain plug gasket on that oil drain plug next oil change will help dry thigs up also. Torque converter /housing cover MIA, also easily obtainable. Check tail shaft for excessive play, may also need tail shaft bushing. Trans: Seals readily available for the output shaft, speedo drive and (not pictured) shift linkage. Looks like some relatively easy fixes there.
